Microclinic Program Crosses State Lines

In 2015, the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation provided funding support for a 1-year pilot program in East Tennessee. This was the second state in the nation that began offering its residents access to the Contagious Health Model, namely the Microclinic Program. Partnering with a variety of organizations including the Tennessee Department of Public Health and University of Tennessee Extension Agencies, another successful facilitator training was held in November of 2015 in Knoxville, TN. With nearly 25 newly certified facilitators equipped with the knowledge and materials to implement Microclinic Programs in communities across East Tennessee, MCI provided continuous support as facilitators recruited, launched, and conducted Microclinic Programs in more than 14 counties in the region.

At the end of this 1-year pilot, researchers from Harvard School of Public Health and Columbia University found that these new programs had a profound impact on their participants:

East TN Results:
Adults
•92.9% of participants increased physical activity levels
•89.7% of participants increased consumption of fruits and vegetables
•73.1% of participants lost weight
•Adult participants lowered blood pressure levels (average change in SBP -3, and DBP -4.68)

Children
•100% of child participants increased physical activity levels
•100% of child participants increased consumption of fruits and vegetables
•81.8% of child participants lost weight

Microclinic Program Expansion

Equipped with these new results, MCI received further funding support in 2016 from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation which enabled a 3-year statewide expansion of the Microclinic Program. MCI continues to partner with local and statewide networks to spread the Contagious Health model across East, Middle, and West Tennessee regions.

What is the Microclinic Program?

The Microclinic Program starts with small groups of friends and family that decide they want to get healthy – these groups are what we call “microclinics”. The microclinic groups participate in a 16-session healthy lifestyle program that allows the group to learn, share, and adopt practical health behavior changes while receiving periodic health screenings to monitor their progress. By engaging in fun and interactive activities such as learning how to decipher nutrition labels at the grocery store, participating in group fitness activities, competing in fun and informative learning games, and encouraging other microclinic members to reach their health goals, the participants make sustainable lifestyle changes that help them manage and prevent chronic disease. The Microclinic Program is not simply a health education program. Instead, it empowers microclinics with the following philosophy: “I can influence my own health; I can influence the health of others; together we can positively influence the health of the entire community.”
